Bharat Natyam Dance Tamil Nadu

Bharat Natyam derives its name from "Bharatha" and "Natyasastra". This is one of the oldest classical dance forms of India. In its early days, Bharat Natyam was performed in the courts and temples of South India. Bharat Natyam flourished under the Devadasi system where women were devoted to the deities of temples as musicians and dancers. Till the early days of 20th century, these highly talented performers and their male gurus (nattuvanars) were the solitary repository of this dance-form.

However, a renewed interest of people in the cultural heritage of India revived Bharat Natyam and brought it out of the premises of temples, into the lives of common people. Thus, the educated elite group of the Indian society was also able to discover Bharat Natyam's beauty. Nevertheless, this classical dance form of India still retains its characteristic devotional style.

Present, Bharat Natyam is a popular classical dance form that is widely performed both by female and male dancers throughout India. Bharat Natyam is a composite form of art, which appeals not only to the senses, but strikes a chord in the heart of the dancer as well as the perceiver. In fact, the dance form of Bharat Natyam communicates spiritual expressions. As a result, one cannot be a true Bharat Natyam dancer unless he/she has respect for spiritual life. This art form of Southern India transports one from worldly nuances to eternal standards.

The dance form of Bharat Natyam is meant for a soloist. It involves some pretty difficult techniques that require a lot of practice. A Bharat Natyam dancer uses every muscle in the body including the face muscles. To perform Bharat Natyam in a flawless manner, a dancer should possess dynamism and elegance, balance and flexibility, great levels of physical stamina and a perfect sense of rhythm. The movements of this classical dance form of South India have ample but precise steps, always in a symmetrical form.

Apart from an extensive range of postures and movements, Bharat Natyam has a well balanced blend of rhythmic and mimetic characteristic too. So, this form of dance is open to fusion and experimental choreography.

It appears that after long years in oblivion, Bharat Natyam has finally come to the forefront to enthrall the people.
