Observatory Hill

Located above Chowrasta Square, Observatory Hill is one of the most visited places in Darjeeling. It offers panoramic views of the mountains along with the presence of Hindu and Buddhist temples like Mahakal Temple, Tibetan Memorial Shrine, and Kanchenjunga Temple.

Many adventure seekers visit this place as you need to trek to reach the top along with devotees who trek to reach the temples. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the top from Mall Road and in the narrow and steep uphill path. There is a small cave, which you need to pass. The cave is revered by temples.

Observatory Hill Darjeeling History

Lama Dorje Rinzing of Bhutia Basti Monastery built Observatory Hill in 1765. After years, Gorkha invaded this place and destroyed the hill in 1815. Later, in 1861, it was rebuilt before an earthquake devastated it again in 1934. The present one owes its existence to Raja of Sikkim.

You can visit many temples around Observatory Hill in Darjeeling. The famous one is the Mahakal Temple located atop a hill, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Siddhi Sai Baba Temple along the roadside and a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman can also be visited.

How to Reach Darjeeling Observatory Hill

No vehicles or taxis can take you up the hill and the only way to reach the top is by trekking. It is located behind Chowrasta Mall, encircled by the Mall Road, about 500 m of uphill walk. The trek will take about 15 minutes to reach Darjeeling Observatory Hill and the Mahakal Temple.

Other Places to Visit around Observatory Hill

Other than Observatory Hill, you can explore Mall Road and Chowrasta Square located near the hill. They are popular tourist places in Darjeeling located at a height of approx. 2,134 meters.
