The small, exotic attraction of Observatory Hill is located near the Chowrasta Square in the dreamy town of Darjeeling. The site was originally the location of the important Dorje Ling Monastery, upon which the town got its name. However, now it is primarily accessed due to a small temple of Mahakal in a cave that is revered by both Budhhists and Hindus. The summit of hill is hued in the whirl of colorful flags and is noticeable with shrines and a peaceful ringing of devotional bells.
The main points of tourist activity around the Observatory Hill are the Chowrasta and The Mall. Amazing views of Kanchenjunga and other 12 snow clad mountains can be afforded from here if luck happens to be on your side. There are few attractions located around the Observatory Hill, out of which Birch Hill and Jawahar Parbat are important. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute on the western side of Jawahar Parbat while Windamere Hotel and Government’s Tourist Lodge above The Mall are the other chief attractions around the Hill.
