Birla Temple Jaipur

An architectural wonder in white marble, Birla temple is yet another religious site in Jaipur that is highly praised by pilgrims as well as archaeology lovers. One of the popular attractions in Jaipur, the Birla temple is also famed as Laxmi Narayan temple and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi.

Unlike the other ancient Hindu temples, it’s architecture has been given a modern approach. Renowned for its fine carvings and delicate work, the temple is a creation of the affluent family of Birlas. The exteriors of this revered Hindu place are full of sculptures based on mythological themes and images of various saints like Socrates and Christ, which are definitely eye catching.

As one enters inside, a large marble panel depicting mythological proceedings is likely to be witnessed. In the description of the temple, special mention has been given to the single stone carved idol of the commemorated deity, Laxmi Narayan, placed inside. Besides this consecrated deity, the famous Hindu temple in Jaipur also houses other important Hindu idols.

Close to the spectacular shrine of the Birla temple, is the majestic museum, which displays the ancestral possessions of the Birla farming. On moving out of the temple complex, visitors can also make their way to Moti Dungri temple which lies in close vicinity.

History of Birla Temple

Jaipur's Birla Mandir was built on land gifted to the country's renowned Birla family by a respected Maharaja for just INR 1. A temple was being built by the B.M. Industrial Foundation. It took around eight years to build the structure, and it was completed in 1985. 

According to legends, Mahatma Gandhi was invited to inaugurate Birla Mandir. Gandhi Ji said he would accept the invitation only if it was open to people of all castes. The temple was officially consecrated on February 22, 1985. Currently, Birla Mandir is open to visitors of all castes and creeds.

Architecture of Birla Temple

It is constructed from white marble and displays modern architecture. Temples consist of four distinct parts: sanctums, towers, main halls, and entrances. A number of Hindu deities are depicted inside - notably Lakshmi, Narayan, and Ganesh. On its exterior, other figures can also be seen, such as Christ, the Virgin Mary, St. Peter, Buddha, Confucius, and Socrates. There are also statues of the Mandir's founders, Rukmani Devi Birla and Braj Mohan Birla. Its architectural style is considered to be modern, It was built on a raised platform, which lifts it up into the Jaipur skyline; at night, it becomes covered in light.

Birla Mandir is best visited in the winter when the weather is pleasant for sightseeing. It looks beautiful at sunset when faint light falls on its white marble shrine, making the entire temple shimmer. If you are okay with crowds, Diwali and Janmashtami are the best times to visit Birla Mandir. Thousands of devotees visit the temple during these Indian festivals.

Once you reach the city, you can easily reach Birla Mandir by bus and cab. Birla Mandir is 15km from the airport and 6km from the railway station. To get to Birla Mandir, travelers can take a taxi or a bus from here.
