Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Also known as Vembanad Bird Sanctuary, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is located on the banks of Vembanad Lake in the Kottayam district of Kerala. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is home to numerous species of birds which include migratory birds from Siberia. This makes the sanctuary, a favorite spot amongst bird watchers.

Spread across an area of 14 acres, the sanctuary was established by the Government of India with an aim of preserving coconut trees and mandrakes, which are the natural habitat of birds.

Some of the popular bird species found at the bird sanctuary include water duck, waterfowl, owl, heron, egret, cuckoo and Siberian cranes.  You can also spot kingfishers, paradise fly-catchers, night herons and golden-backed woodpeckers in the park. The place offers a unique bird watching experience to all the visitors as they can enjoy bird watching by hiring houseboats and motorboats on the Vembanad Lake.

There is a 'Baker's Mansion' in the sanctuary which is 50 years old. The mansion is managed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. This is why, the sanctuary was also known as 'Baker's Estate' in the earlier times.

The best time to visit the sanctuary is between the months of November and February when migratory birds from across the globe come here. If you wish to watch local birds in this sanctuary, then it is best to visit from June to August. You can opt for a boat ride or a houseboat ride for bird watching.
