Times Gone By:
Flipping to the pages of the olden times, Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica dates back to the 16th century when the Portuguese missionaries arrived in 1500 CE. The construction started after the first Portuguese Viceroy, Dom Francisco de Almeida got approval from the Raja of Kochi to build a church. On May 3 1505, the foundation of the church was laid, which is the feast day of the ‘Invention of the Holy Cross’. Thus, the church was named Santa Cruz.
Over the years, this Santa Cruz Basilica has undergone intense demolition and repairments. The church you see today was consecrated on 19 November 1905.
