Kollam Beach or Mahatma Gandhi Beach is one of the twin beaches of Kollam. This is a major attraction and pulls a huge number of tourists every day. One can indulge in fun activities here or opt for boat ride. Adjacent to the beach is Mahatma Gandhi Park, which was inaugurated in 1961 by the then Vice President of India Zakir Hussein. A 10-meter-tall statue of a mermaid is installed in the middle of the park; children can enjoy riding different swings here. A major landmark of the beach is the 144-tall lighthouse that was built in 1902. A part of Kollam Beach acts as a major port for international trade of spices and is one of Malabar’s oldest ports. At a short distance from Kollam beach lays a popular attraction of Kerala, Ashtamudi Lake. The lake is popular for houseboat cruising. Short canal cruises to the nearby island village of Thangasseri is enjoyed by the visitors. Just like in Kochi, you can spot Chinese nets in Kollam Beach too.
