Well-known for its serene ambience, Munroe Island is one of the most popular tourist spots in Kollam (around 24km away). The lush greenery and tranquil ambience of the place make every traveler relax and enjoy like never before. The island is named in the memory of Colonel Munroe, the British resident of erstwhile Travancore state.
The enchanting island is formed by the backwaters of Ashtamudi Kayal and Kallada River. Blessed with scenic surrounding, the island boasts of number of criss-cross canals, zig-zag water channels and well-maintained coconut farms. You can also spot some colorful feathered migratory birds.
The Munroe Island in Kollam is best known for its coir making; you can see some village ladies busy in making coir ropes by hand. You also get to see how the coconut oil is extracted from “copra”, dried coconut.
Visitors here can experience country craft cruise on backwater island village, offered by District Tourism Promotion Councils (DTDC). The best time to be at Munroe Island is from August to March. Well-connected to all major cities Munroe is easily accessible by all modes of transportation. Trivandrum International airport (83km) is the nearest airport and nearest train station is Kollam (26km).
