Jahangir Art Gallery Mumbai

The Jehangir Art Gallery is a famous art gallery located in Mumbai. Cowasji Jehangir donated the total cost of the mansion. After that, G.M. Bhuta designed the gallery for G.M. Bhuta & Associates. Today, the gallery is managed by the Committee of Management of the Bombay Art Society.

It is one of the city's most prestigious venues for Indian artists. Four exhibition halls in the gallery display the creativity of artists of ancient and future eras—the creative pieces of art shown in the gallery allure art lovers from all across the world.

The gallery complex is home to the popular Samovar cafe, which features an ambiance dating back to the socialist history of India in the 1970s. Several artists from around the world wish to display their work in this gallery. However, many artists must wait years to showcase their work in a gallery. Outside the gallery, on the pavement, visitors can find the works of struggling artists who failed to make an entry to the gallery. The gallery is a popular tourist attraction in Mumbai and hosts several local artists' shows.

Jehangir Art Gallery History

The Bombay Art Society was established in 1888, marking the beginning of the contemporary art movement in Mumbai, and Sir Cowasji Jehangir had long been a supporter. He held the title of the Society's founding President for a very long time.

Another person who enjoyed art during that period was Dr. Homi Bhabha, a renowned nuclear scientist. Along with the von Leyden brothers and Walter Langhammer, he persuaded Sir Cowasji to support the creation of an art gallery. The idea was to give artists a place to display their works and hold events relevant to the arts.

Jehangir Art Gallery Architecture

Durga Shankar Bajpai and G. M. Bhuta laid the foundation for the Jehangir Art Gallery. It combines traditional planning with contemporary design. In those days, it was considered an architectural achievement to use diffused natural light, a cantilevered entrance, and a reinforced concrete framework that allowed for a span without columns.

The Jehangir Art Gallery's architecture is inward-looking. Although it is easily accessible, it is not open to the public. However, there is around 550 feet of hanging wall space in the Auditorium and Exhibition Gallery. Additionally, the location may be used for concerts because of how the lighting and acoustics have been built.
