Toy Train Route
The captivating rail journey begins from Kalka and ends at Shimla at an elevation of 2076 meters. It runs for 96 kilometers through 20 train stations and passes through 103 tunnels and 800 bridges with 900 curves. Also, Barog station has the longest tunnel on this route, which is about 1144 meters long.
The speed of the toy train is decreased due to steep slopes that it has to climb but allows the passengers to witness the fascinating views along the way.
Tourist Train Services
Apart from Shimla’s two passenger trains, it operates three tourist trains on the Kalka-Shimla route. These include -
- Himalayan Queen: Standard train with first and second class coaches.
- Shivalik Deluxe Express: Premium train with wide glass windows, carpet, music, and cushioned seats.
- Rail Motor Car: Express service that resembles a bus from the Second World War.
Special train services: Shivalik Special is an extraordinary train offered during the holiday season. It starts from May until July, September, October, December, and January. It takes five and a half hours to complete with 9 stops in between.
