Known to be the tallest and the biggest church in Asia, Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours lies in the heart of Thrissur city. This double-storeyed structure of Gothic style of architecture spreads in an area of 25,000 square feet. Also known as Puthan Pally, the church was consecrated in 1940 and gained the status of Minor Basilica in the year 1992.
The striking feature of the architecture of Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours is the 260-feet high Bible tower, which can be found in the back of the church. This tower is known to be the depiction of the life of Jesus Christ. Climb up the top of the tower, to savor wonderful views of Thrissur city. The bible tower is opened from 10:00 AM to 06:00 PM (Tuesday to Friday), and 10:00 AM to 07.30 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.
140-feet in height, two bell towers adorn the front of the church. Images of various saints, wonderful mural paintings and different scenes from the scriptures adorn the interiors of the church. The church looks well-lit with different kinds of electric lamps. Mosaic bricks have been used in the flooring. The 100-feet high main altar is supported by adjacently laid array of 10 altars. The musical bell in the church has been imported from Germany. One of the most popular churches in Thrissur, Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours also has a septic-cell model cemetery under the northern side of the back of the building.
