Significance of Amarnath Yatra

Amarnath Yatra undertaken in pure state of mind with a commitment of long duration where you leave behind earthly attachments and get time to reflect inwards leads to the union with the divine, a journey of great moral significance.

Legend of Amarnath Yatra

It is said that when Ma Parvati, Lord Shiva’s consort insisted on knowing the secret of the lord’s immortality, Lord Shiva finally gave in. To narrate the Amar Katha (Story of immortality), Lord Shiva, along with Ma Parvati started in search of a place where no living things could dwell so that he could narrate the story.

Thus Lord Shiva started his journey from Pahalgam where he left his ‘vahana’ (vehicle) Nandi, at Chandanwari he discarded the moon, upon reaching Sheshnag, he left behind his snake and he left behind his son Ganesha at Mahaguna Parvat. Finally at Panjtarni he let go of the five elements and thus he arrived at the cave.

In the cave, Lord Shiva created rudra Kalagni and ordered him to destroy any living thing near cave with divine fire. Thus, after making sure that the Amar Katha could not be heard by any living being, the lord began to narrate the story to Ma Parvati. Interestingly, two pigeon eggs that were lying beneath the deer skin upon which lord Shiva was sitting were saved by the fire. Ma Parvati fell asleep in the middle of the story but the two eggs hatched and overheard the entire Amar Katha and became immortal.
