Observatory Hill Darjeeling History

Lama Dorje Rinzing of Bhutia Basti Monastery built Observatory Hill in 1765. After years, Gorkha invaded this place and destroyed the hill in 1815. Later, in 1861, it was rebuilt before an earthquake devastated it again in 1934. The present one owes its existence to the Raja of Sikkim.

You can visit many temples around Observatory Hill in Darjeeling. The famous one is the Mahakal Temple, located atop a hill dedicated to Lord Shiva. Siddhi Sai Baba Temple along the roadside and a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman can also be visited.

No vehicles or taxis can take you up the hill, and trekking is the only way to reach the top. It is located behind Chowrasta Mall, encircled by Mall Road, about 500 m of uphill walk. The trek will take about 15 minutes to reach Darjeeling Observatory Hill and the Mahakal Temple.
