Eden Gardens, Kolkata, also popularly called the Lord’s of Asia, is the oldest cricket ground in India. Established in 1864, it is one of the finest stadiums in the world. It definitely has the largest accommodation compared to all the grounds in the world.

History of Eden Gardens

It is believed that the land of Kolkata Eden Gardens stadium was the property of the Auckland Family, the Governor General of India in the British Raj. He named the grounds inspired by the Bible. In 1841, the land was presented to the citizens of Calcutta for recreational purposes. In 1871, the Calcutta Cricket Club was established, with Eden Gardens serving as the headquarters. It started the history of playing cricket in the ground amidst pictorial surroundings.

In the years 1917-18, Eden Gardens hosted its first-ever first-class match. Notably, in January 1934, a significant Test match against Douglas Jardine’s MCC took place here. Since that match, the ground has hosted more Test matches than any other venue in India. Additionally, the first One Day International match at Eden Gardens was played in February 1987 against Pakistan.

How To Reach Eden Gardens Kolkata

In order to reach Eden Gardens, you must first travel to Kolkata by air, road, or train. It is very well connected to other parts of India, making it easy to reach. Getting to Eden Gardens from the airport, train station, or metro is as follows:

From Airport:

Upon arriving at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, you can take a cab to reach Eden Garden. If you are coming from an Indian city, you will land at Terminal 1. If you are arriving from other Indian cities, you will land at Terminal 2.

From Bus Stop

The BBD Bagh Bus Stop is the nearest bus station to Eden Gardens, around 900m away. Many buses arrive here from nearby cities of Kolkata, such as Asansol and Durgapur.

From Metro Station

The closest metro station to Eden Gardens is Esplanade, which is 1.1 km away. To reach the stadium, you can take an auto-rickshaw or walk. You can also walk to reach the stadium from the station.

From railway station

The nearest railway station is Howrah railway station, approximately 4 km away. You can take a cab, taxi, or bus from outside the station to reach Eden Gardens.
