Diwali or Deepavali as it is known is the festival of lights, which is celebrated with much pomp and show. The history of deepavali can be traced from the time of Ramayana, the popular Hindu epic. The time when Rama returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, the entire area was decorated with lamps or diyas. From that time onwards, using lamps during diwali has become an integral part of the festival.

Diwali festival in Jaisalmer is a grand and elaborate affair. As the city is mostly walled and has a number of forts, the region is well decorated with lights. Most of the forts and ancient palaces have a festive look. Various types of fireworks are displayed, which are unique and beautiful .At times special firework shows are organized, which are pretty famous among the local people and tourists. Apart from fireworks, several idols are worshipped during the day. The entire festival is celebrated nearly for six days, which includes good food, new clothes and lots of fire crackers.
