When did Rancho School come into the limelight?

Rancho School

Druk Padma Karpo School is one of the top institutions in Ladakh. It came into the light after the climax scenes from the movie 3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan (Ranchhod Das or Rancho) and other movie actors, were filmed at this school.

The scenes were shot in September 2008, and the movie was released in December 2009, after which the school became a tourist hotspot. Pangong Lake had a similar fate. As a result, some scenes from the movie’s second half were shot at this lake, making it popular.

The movie became a super hit and played a massive role in boosting Ladakh tourism as thousands of people from around the world came to see this beautiful place. The searches for “Rancho School” or “3 Idiots School” shot up on Google.

And now, it is called the Rancho Wall or “The Idiot Wall,” where young students gave “Chatur” an electric shock.

What to expect on your Rancho School tour?

Rancho School Shey Ladakh

A 15-minute tour at Rancho School Ladakh will let you explore the classic Rancho Wall and the school premises. But be careful, it is a school, so you have to maintain decorum. Besides, you will find a Rancho cafe and a gift shop within the school grounds to sit and enjoy the mesmerizing mountain views.

The wall where the scene was shot on the campus was featured in the movie’s last scenes. “Chatur” was the character’s name who tries to urinate at the wall in the scene but gets an electric shock from two kids with a wire and a bulb from the 1st floor.

You can witness the Rancho Wall decorated with graffiti displaying the electrocution of Chatur. Tourists visiting here click pictures in front of the wall and pose like they’re peeing, similar to the movie.

The Druk Padma Karpo Educational Society manages the school, which goes on regular construction with the help of international architects.
