The Zanskar Valley that lies between the Great Himalayan Range and the Zanskar mountains is drained by two principal streams that meet to form the Zanskar River. Zanskar is 20km South of Rangdum across the Pazila watershed. It is one of the most isolated regions of the Himalayan Valleys. Panzila is at the height of 4401 ms, a picturesque tableland circumscribed with snow-covered peaks, and has two alpine lakes. “Drang-Drung” glacier is considered the largest glacier beside the Siachen glacier. It is spectacular to view the long winding river of ice. A cliff-like projection of the glacier is the point from where the Stod or Doda River rises. Around a 10,000 strong Buddhist population resides in the area. It covers a geographical area of 5000 sq km.
About 8 months a year, the area remains closed because of heavy snowfall, so planning your tour to Zanskar between July and October is better. From mid of July to early November, you can trek along the 240 km long Kargil-Padum road. Trekking along the mountain paths is lovely during the summers when the region is again fresh and alive after months of cold winters.
