The Cathedral of the Holy Name is listed among the essential attractions in the City of Mumbai. The city’s Christian community is a very holy Roman Catholic church. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Bombay and serves as the headquarters of the Archdiocese of Bombay. The Church marks the old-world charm of the ancient Colonial era.
Cathedral of the Holy Name History
Historically, it was the outcome of a deal between the Archbishop and the “Bombay Improvement Trust.” Archbishop Dalhoff hired Mr. W.A. Chambers to build the building, which included a church, school, and residential section. The Bombay Trust gave its approval to the Church’s plan on November 21, 1901, and within a year, construction work had started. On January 15, 1905, the Church of the Holy Name was finally available for public worship.

It boasts striking Gothic architectural style touches, including buttresses, spires, and impressive interiors such as a pipe organ, frescoes, a bell offered by Pope Paul VI, a stole decorated with gold contributed by Pope John XXIII, and a stole with a red hat gifted by Pope Pius XII to Cardinal Valerian Gracias.
