Mahalaxmi Race Course is an oval-shaped horse racing track. It is roughly 15 km from the city center of Mumbai. It is one of the major attractions of Mumbai, which is famous for horse races and McDowell’s Indian Derby. This event is held every first Sunday of February, attracting many localities and other tourists to this place. However, the event is majorly held for the high-society people of Mumbai. The games, conducted from November to April, are attended mainly by actors, celebrities, and other well-known city people. In addition, several racecourse games occur where people put their bets on horses.

Mahalaxmi Race Course History

The racecourse acquires an area of up to 225 acres. The track is oval-shaped and is 2400 meters. The racecourse was put up facing the sea and designed to resemble the Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne. The course is the property of a sports club in Mumbai, The Royal Western Turf Club, considered one of India’s most famous horse racing tracks. The course’s structure boasts royal style and holds great historical importance. The attractive grandstand at the racecourse is listed among the heritage structures of the country. Moreover, there is also a beautiful lawn inside the racecourse where grand weddings, parties, and other gatherings are organized. 

Best Time to visit Mahalaxmi Race Course

If you plan to visit the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, you must do so from mid-November to April, when the horse racing season is on. At the beginning of the season, horse racing is usually scheduled twice a week, on Sundays and Thursdays. However, when horse racing is in its final stages, the races are hosted on Saturdays and Sundays. Among the races held at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse are the Great Indian Derby Race, the 1000 Guineas Race, the 2000 Guineas Race, the Oaks Race, and the St. Leger Race.

  • Please find out about the standard way of dressing.
  • If you are visiting the VIP enclosure, the dress code for gentlemen is a suit or safari or a full-sleeved shirt with a tie or a jacket or blazer (shoes are a MUST). Or else, dress like a dhoti or churidar with appropriate footwear is allowed.
  • Ladies can wear anything except beachwear.
  • No specific dress code is required if you are planning to visit the public enclosure.
