The country’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), preserves the monetary heritage of the country through the RBI Monetary Museum. Through this museum, the Reserve Bank of India disseminates information about the economic history of India to the general public. This one-of-a-kind museum in India was inaugurated in 2004 by India’s President, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam. The museum talks about money from when it evolved from the old barter system. In the museum, visitors get to see coins of various sizes and shapes when they were issued during the 6th century B.C. to present times. Also, there are panels of banknotes and instruments of banking displayed in the museum.

Different sections of the RBI Monetary Museum

The museum is divided into 6 different sections: Concepts, Curiosities, and the Idea of Money, Indian Paper Money, Know Your Currency, Indian Coinage, Coins to Bank Notes, and RBI and You. The best among these sections is the second one, “Curiosities and the Idea of Money,” which displays the variety of coins through the years, starting from the 4th century B.C. Every museum section is explained through graphic panels in both English and Hindi. In addition, there is a screen for trading in foreign exchange that comes with live quotes on foreign trade, share prices, and commodities. With this, visitors see how the exchange rates of different currencies keep changing.
