Settled within the close proximity to the city center of Mumbai, roughly 15km, Mahalaxmi Race Course is an oval- shaped horse racing track. It is one of the major attractions of Mumbai which is famous for horse races and McDowell's Indian Derby- an event that is held on every first Sunday of February attracting a lot of localities and other tourists to this place. The event is majorly held for high society people of Mumbai. In fact, the games conducted from November to April are attended mainly by actors, celebrities and other famed people of city. There are a number of racecourse games that take place here in which people put their bet on horses.
Constructed in 1883, the racecourse acquires an area up to 225 acres the track is oval shaped and is 2400 meters. The racecourse was put-up facing a sea and designed similar to that of Caulfield Race course in Melbourne. Now, the course is the property of a sports club in Mumbai, The Royal Western Turf Club, considered to be one among the most popular horse racing tracks in India. The structure of the course boasts of royal styles and holds great historical importance. The attractive Grandstand of the racecourse is listed among the heritage structures of the country. Moreover, there is also a beautiful lawn inside the racecourse where grand weddings, parties other gatherings are organized.
