Nalanda is located at a distance of 55 miles from the city of Patna in state of Bihar. Nalanda was an ancient Buddhist center of learning from 427 to 1197 BC and is regarded as one of the first great universities in the world.
It was founded in the 5th century BC under the benefaction of the Gupta emperors, chiefly Kumaragupta. It admitted more than 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers during its glorious days.
Nalanda is a great architectural masterpiece and its building was a grand structure. There are plenty of ancient monuments and religious shrines in the area.
