Best fit: October to March

Cooler weather makes sightseeing in Bangalore and Mysore comfortable, while Ooty enjoys pleasant hill weather. Bandipur is also particularly rewarding during the cooler, drier months.

Also possible: April, May and September

April and May are warmer in Bangalore and Mysore, but Ooty remains a pleasant escape; the dry season can also improve wildlife visibility in Bandipur. September is greener and workable, though occasional rain may affect outdoor plans.

Avoid / least suitable: June to August

These are the main monsoon months. Rain can affect road journeys, forest access, viewpoints and outdoor sightseeing, particularly around the Nilgiris and Bandipur.

  • This itinerary combines city sightseeing, hill roads and forest travel, so expect changing driving conditions.
  • The Mysore–Ooty route passes through Bandipur; plan this transfer during daylight, as the highway through the reserve is closed to regular traffic from 9 PM to 6 AM.
  • Passing through Bandipur does not guarantee wildlife sightings. A proper safari requires additional time and should be booked separately if desired.
  • Bandipur safaris operate in scheduled morning and afternoon slots, and popular jeep slots can fill quickly.
  • The drive towards Ooty involves winding mountain roads, so travellers prone to motion sickness may want to carry suitable medication.
  • Carry a light jacket for Ooty, even when Bangalore and Mysore feel warm.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes for Mysore Palace, gardens, viewpoints and Ooty sightseeing.
  • Doddabetta Peak views depend on weather and visibility; mist or rain can sometimes limit the panorama.
  • Temple visits may require modest clothing and removal of footwear; follow local photography rules.
  • Keep some flexibility for traffic, weather and sightseeing timings, especially during weekends, holidays and the monsoon.
