Best fit: October to February

Cooler, mostly drier conditions make long days at Badami, Pattadakal, Hampi and Chitradurga much easier, while Chikmagalur, Coorg, Malpe and Mysore are also pleasant. Hampi and Badami specifically favour the cooler months for outdoor exploration.

Also possible: March and September

March is still workable, especially in Chikmagalur and Coorg, but North Karnataka becomes noticeably hotter. September brings lush scenery after the rains, though the Western Ghats and coastal stretch can still be wet.

Avoid / least suitable: April to August

April and May can be intensely hot around Bijapur, Badami and Hampi. June to August brings heavy rain to coastal Karnataka and the Western Ghats, which can affect road journeys and outdoor sightseeing around Malpe, Chikmagalur and Coorg.

  • This is a long multi-city road journey, with several 3–5 hour driving days, so some flexibility in timings is useful. The published route covers 14 nights across multiple heritage, hill, coastal and wildlife destinations.
  • Hampi, Badami, Pattadakal and Chitradurga involve considerable walking, uneven surfaces, steps and exposed outdoor areas; comfortable shoes and sun protection are important.
  • Badami can become very hot from March onward, while stone paths may be slippery during the monsoon. Starting early makes sightseeing more comfortable.
  • Nagarhole safari slots are limited, and advance booking is recommended. Forest Department safaris generally operate in morning and afternoon windows, subject to local conditions.
  • Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Keep noise low, do not feed animals and follow your naturalist or forest guide’s instructions during the safari.
  • Shravanabelagola requires a climb of more than 600 steps to reach the main Gommateshwara complex, so allow enough time and assess mobility requirements beforehand.
  • At temples and religious sites, wear modest clothing, remove footwear where required and follow local photography rules.
  • Malpe and coastal Karnataka are best from roughly November to February; monsoon rain can limit beach and water-based activities.
  • Carry a light layer for Chikmagalur and Coorg, but sun protection and drinking water are equally important for the hotter heritage circuit.
  • Keep some room for weather, traffic, safari and monument-timing changes, particularly during monsoon or festival periods.
