Important Information

  • Light, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees; a light shawl or stole is useful for temple visits.
  • Easy-to-remove footwear, as you must leave shoes outside at most temples.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a light umbrella, especially for Mahabalipuram, Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari.
  • A light rain jacket or compact umbrella if travelling between July and December.
  • Water, ORS/electrolytes and personal medicines for the longer road and sightseeing days.
  • Some cash and a valid ID, useful for footwear counters, phone deposits, small entrance fees and local expenses.
  • If planning ritual bathing at Rameshwaram, carry a change of clothes and a small quick-dry towel.
  • Camera-enabled mobile phones are now restricted at 52 major HR&CE temples in Tamil Nadu. Relevant temples on this itinerary include Kapaleeswarar Temple, Parthasarathy Temple, Arunachaleswarar Temple, Brihadeeswarar Temple, Meenakshi Amman Temple and Ramanathaswamy Temple. Phones generally need to be deposited before entry. The rule took effect on 1 September 2026.
  • Avoid photography, videos, selfies and reels inside temple sanctums or anywhere local signage prohibits them. Photography is also restricted in the inner areas of Chidambaram Nataraja Temple.
  • At the protected monuments of Mahabalipuram, do not climb on structures, carve or scratch monuments, cross into restricted areas, or use drones, tripods or undertake filming without prior permission.
  • Footwear is not allowed inside temples and consecrated areas; use the designated footwear counters or racks.
  • At Isha Yoga Centre, alcohol, illicit drugs, cigarettes and non-vegetarian food are prohibited. Photography is permitted at Adiyogi, but not inside other parts of the Yoga Centre.
  • Private or hired vehicles cannot be driven directly up to Matrimandir; visitors leave vehicles at the Auroville Visitors Centre.

Best fit: January to February. Cooler, drier weather makes temple visits, heritage sightseeing and long road journeys more comfortable.

Also possible: March, July to September and December. These months are workable, though you may encounter warmer days, humidity or occasional rain. December can still see some northeast-monsoon showers.

Avoid: April to June and October to November. April - June can be very hot and humid, while October - November may bring heavy rain and weather-related disruptions along coastal parts of the route.

  • Expect several long driving days. The itinerary itself lists transfers of roughly 4–5 hours on several days, with Rameshwaram to Kanyakumari around 5.9 hours. Keep the schedule realistic for seniors and families.
  • Many major temples have morning and evening darshan sessions with a midday closure, so plan sightseeing around temple timings rather than treating it like a normal monument visit.
  • The new phone-deposit rules can add waiting time at popular temples. Storage arrangements and charges can vary; for example, the ₹5 charge at Arunachaleswarar Temple was subsequently withdrawn, although the phone restriction remains.
  • At Auroville, seeing Matrimandir from the Viewing Point and entering the Inner Chamber are two different experiences. Visitors obtain viewing passes themselves, while Inner Chamber concentration requires booking; same-day bookings are unavailable, and visitor concentration is closed on Sundays and Tuesdays.
  • Temple dress, photography and access rules vary, particularly around inner sanctums. Follow the instructions displayed at each temple rather than assuming the same rules apply everywhere.
  • Plan important temple visits for early morning or evening where possible. This reduces heat exposure and often gives a calmer darshan experience; Indian Holiday’s own Tamil Nadu temple guidance recommends these periods.
  • During major festivals, expect larger crowds, longer queues and slower road movement, particularly around Tiruvannamalai, Madurai and Rameshwaram.
  • The itinerary’s Chunnambar boat ride and other coastal experiences should remain flexible in poor weather or rough conditions.
