Description:

Makar Sankranti marks the beginning of the sun’s journey to the Northern Hemisphere (Makara raasi), which stands for the commencement of Uttarayana Punyakalam. It is a day of celebration all over the country. The day starts with people taking holy dips in the waters and worshipping the Sun. This period of Sankranti is traditionally considered as an fortunate time and it is believed that those who die during this period have no rebirth. According to the great Hindu epic Mahabharata, Pitamaha Bhishma had the boon to choose the time of his death, and after falling to the arrows of Arjuna, he waited on a bed of arrows to depart from this world only during this period. The Makar Sankranti Mela is held to celebrate the Makar Sankranti where a large number of people are seen enjoying themselves in the huge fair.
