भगवान शिव के द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिंग में चौथा ओम्कारेश्वर है. ओमकार का उच्चारण सर्वप्रथम स्रष्टिकर्ता ब्रह्मा के मुख से हुआ था. वेद पाठ का प्रारंभ भी ॐ के बिना नहीं होता है. उसी ओमकार स्वरुप ज्योतिर्लिंग श्री ओम्कारेश्वर है, अर्थात यहाँ भगवान शिव ओम्कार स्वरुप में प्रकट हुए हैं.

The Kedarnath Jyotirlinga temple also a part of Panch Kedar and comes in the first number of Panch Kedars circuit in Uttarakhand. The Lord Mahadev here is in the form of the shape of the back of the Bull (the Hump). The Kedarnath Jyotirlinga temple is believed to be built by the Pandavas as penance to Lord Shiva after Mahabharata. The Sabha Mandap of the Kedarnath Temple has the idols of Pandavas along with Kunti, Draupadi, and Shree Krishna.
The current structure of the Kedarnath Dham is believed to have been built by Adi Shankaracharya some 1200 years ago. This jyotirlinga is also mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures like Skanda Purana.

Bhimashankar Temple was constructed around 12th Century by Vishwakarma sculptors and later several shikharas (spires) were added to the structure by Maratha rulers in the 18th century.
It is believed Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga was constructed around a swayambhu linga, a lingam that originated on its own. The Jyotirlinga is in the center of the sanctum of the Bhimashankar Temple. There are intricate carvings of divine beings and humans on the pillars and doorframes of the temple. The temple stands today as a testament to the Vishwakarma style of architecture.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple located in Varanasi is perhaps one of the most revered Shiva Temples in India. This ancient Jyotirlinga has been mentioned in the Puranas including the Kashi Khanda (section) of the Skanda Purana. The original temple was destroyed by Qutb Al’din Aibak’s Army general of Sultan Muhammad Ghori when The Turkish/Ghurid Empire first invaded India and established Delhi Sultanate by defeating Prithvi Raj Chauhan. The current structure was constructed by the Maratha ruler Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in the year 1780

Trimbakeshwar is one of the holiest towns in India considered to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesha. It is from here that the river Godavari also originates. Trimbakeshwar Temple was constructed by the Balaji Roa, the 3rd Peshwa ruler.
The unique feature of the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is its 3 faces. They embody the holy trinity of the Hindu Gods Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Rudra. Due to the excessive use of water, the lingam at Trimbakeshwar Temple has started to erode. The lingam’s erosion is believed to symbolize the eroding nature of human society. The Lingas here are covered by a jeweled crown which is placed over the Gold Mask of Tridev (Brahma Vishnu Mahesh).


The Shiva Purana says Nageshvara Jyotirlinga is in ‘the Darukavana’, which is an ancient name of a forest in India. ‘Darukavana’ finds mention in Indian epics, such as Kamyakavana, Dvaitavana, and Dandakavana.
The Nageshwara Jyotirlingam is a medium-sized lingam devoted to lord Shiva with a silver snake on top. An idol of goddess Parvati is also present behind the shiv lingam.
