Terekhol Fort has witnessed several interesting episodes of India’s history. Its ramparts and walls are silent testimonies to several episodes of valor, sacrifice and victories. Originally built by the Maharaja of Sawantwadi, Khem Sawant Bhonsle, it was wrested from him by the Portuguese invaders in 1746. After undergoing several renovations in 1764, it acquired importance as a military stronghold, considered to be the primary defense for the Portuguese colony of Goa.

Terekhol Fort is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Goa, and attracts lots of visitors. It provides magnificent views of the Tiracol River and Arabian Sea. From here, you can also get views of the Querem and Kalacha beaches, two of the most beautiful beaches in Goa. A fascinating piece of architecture on the fort are its turrets, which enhance the beauty of the fort as a whole. There is also a church inside the fort where Masses are held most Sundays, especially on the feast of St. Anthony, which is held in the month of May. Today however, the fort has been converted into a hotel, and upon visiting it, one can enjoy an enjoyable meal at the hotel’s restaurant.
