The Amarnath Yatra is one of the sacred pilgrimages in India and receives a huge footfall. Every year the Yatra starts around the starting of June and usually ends in August. Thus, this is the best time to plan your Amarnath Yatra. Due to lying at a high altitude at a remote location, the Amarnath Cave remains inaccessible the majority of the year. During these months, the weather and route to Amarnath become clear. Thus, the pilgrimage to the abode of Lord Shiva becomes possible. Also, to get the Darshan of the entire lingam of the Almighty, it is advisable to travel to Amarnath. This year the Yatra starts in July 2026.

Seasons Months Temperature
Summers May to June 10°c – 28°c
Monsoon July to Sep 12°c – 29°c
Winter Oct to April -7°c – 27°c

FAQs

Q: Can I visit Amarnath outside the official Yatra dates?

No, pilgrims should plan their visit within the officially announced Amarnath Yatra dates. Visiting nearby Pahalgam or Sonamarg does not mean the cave is open for darshan. Check the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board’s annual schedule before booking, and travel on the date assigned in your permit.

Q: Can I change my Amarnath Yatra date if the weather forecast is poor?

Do not assume you can use your existing permit on another date. Pilgrims must undertake the Yatra on their registered date, subject to official permission for movement. If poor weather affects your plans, contact the Shrine Board or registration authorities for guidance before changing your accommodation or transport bookings.

Q: Are warm clothes necessary for the Amarnath Yatra during summer?

Yes, warm clothes are essential even during the summer pilgrimage period. The Shrine Board warns that temperatures along the route can suddenly fall below 5°C. Carry layers that you can put on easily, and keep spare clothing in a waterproof bag so it stays dry if rain catches you on the trek.

Q: Is there a better season for families or senior citizens to visit Amarnath?

Families and senior pilgrims must travel within the official Yatra period; there is no separate season for these groups. Eligibility and fitness matter more than the month you choose. Children below 13 and adults above 70 are not permitted. Eligible travellers need the required health certificate and should discuss existing medical conditions with their doctor.

Q: Should I allow time to acclimatise before trekking to Amarnath?

Yes, allow time to adjust to the altitude rather than beginning a rushed ascent. The Shrine Board advises pilgrims to ascend slowly, take time to acclimatise and avoid overexertion. Build rest into your itinerary, and seek medical assistance if you develop symptoms of altitude illness or feel unwell during the trek.
