The district of Alwar in Rajasthan is positioned in a group of small hills of the Aravalli Ranges. The Alwar district is very popular for the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary, where some finest variety of animals and birds can be spotted. Alwar has a rich historical as well as cultural heritage. The city of Alwar, at one point of time, was an ancient Rajput state, and was formerly known as Mewar. The city of Mewar had always been the nearest to the imperial Delhi. The Kesroli Fort, which is a 600 year old fort, does not seem to have much of character, and it does not even create any thrill. But as one climbs up the paved slope and walks into the doorway of the fort into the central courtyard, one finds it fascinating. The walls of the Kesroli Fort are covered by red bougainvilleas, which adhere attractively to the walls.

The Government Museums in Alwar has some of the finest collections of Rajput and Mughal paintings which date back to the 18th and the 19th centuries. There are also some ancient and rare manuscripts written in Persian, Urdu, Arabic and Sanskrit.

Another tourist attraction in the city of Alwar is the Purjan Vihar or the Company Garden. The garden had been laid out in the year 1868, during the rule of Maharaja Shiv Dan Singh. The Purjan Vihar has an enchanting setting called Shimla, which was constructed by Maharaja Mangal Singh.

The other tourist attraction in Alwar is the Vinay Vilas Mahal or the City Palace Complex.

Another attraction is the Jai Samand Lake, a beautiful non-natural lake built by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1910 A.D.
