Places to Visit in Thailand

Thailand offers a mix of lively cities, historic temples, tropical islands and national parks. Bangkok is known for its royal landmarks and street markets, while Phuket and Krabi attract visitors with their beaches and coastal scenery. Chiang Mai offers a quieter experience in northern Thailand, with temples and local markets.

Thailand Highlights

Places to Build Your Trip Around

Bangkok

Bangkok brings royal landmarks, neighbourhood markets and riverside life into one busy city. Explore the Grand Palace area, visit Wat Pho and see Wat Arun across the Chao Phraya River. The city offers plenty to experience, from traditional Thai culture to modern shopping and entertainment.

Planning tip: Visit the Grand Palace and Wat Pho together, as they are close to each other. Bangkok’s traffic can make travelling between distant attractions time-consuming.

Phuket

Phuket is one of Thailand’s most popular beach destinations, known for its sandy shores, seaside resorts and island excursions. Patong attracts visitors looking for nightlife and entertainment, while quieter areas such as Kamala are popular for relaxed beach stays. Away from the coast, Phuket Old Town is worth exploring for its colourful Sino-Portuguese buildings.

Planning tip: Stay near the preferred beach as travelling can be time-consuming.

Krabi

Krabi’s limestone cliffs and coastal scenery make it a strong choice for a beach holiday. Ao Nang is a practical base for boat outings, while Railay offers beaches beneath high rock faces. Add an island excursion, but keep a spare day on land in case sea conditions change.

Planning tip: Railay is reached by boat; check transfers before booking a late arrival.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai combines old-city temples with Lanna culture, craft shopping and northern Thai food. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep overlooks the city from the surrounding hills. Spend time in the old centre before adding a mountain excursion, rather than using every day for a long drive out of town.

Planning tip: Choose a walking-street market that operates on the day of your visit.

Ayutthaya

The former capital’s temple ruins make Ayutthaya a rewarding history stop north of Bangkok. Brick towers, monasteries and the remains of royal-era buildings reveal a different side of Thailand from its modern cities. A day trip can cover a selected group of sites; an overnight stay allows a slower visit.

Planning tip: Start early and take breaks between exposed archaeological sites.

Koh Samui

Koh Samui suits travellers who want to settle into an island stay with beaches, restaurants and short outings. Chaweng offers a busier base, while Bophut adds a village-style waterfront and dining options. Boat excursions can extend the trip, but the island itself deserves some unscheduled time.

Planning tip: Check Samui’s own weather pattern; it does not share Phuket’s rainy season.

Pattaya and Koh Larn

Pattaya offers an easy coastal extension from Bangkok, with entertainment, dining and seaside hotels. Koh Larn, reached by boat, adds a separate beach outing. This combination suits a short city-and-coast trip, particularly when you want to avoid another domestic flight.

Planning tip: Check the last return boat and sea conditions before heading to Koh Larn.

Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake

Khao Sok introduces southern Thailand’s rainforest scenery, with forest walks and boat trips among the limestone formations of Cheow Lan Lake. A guided outing or a lake stay gives you time to appreciate the landscape. The village area and lake pier are separate locations, so transfers need planning.

Planning tip: Confirm where your accommodation is and whether lake transfers are included.

FAQs

Answers Before You Finalise Your Dates

Where should I go on my first trip to Thailand?

Bangkok plus one beach base, such as Phuket or Krabi, is a practical starting point. Choose Chiang Mai instead if temples, food and northern culture matter more than beach time. Your travel month should also influence the coast you choose.

Can I cover Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket in seven days?

It is possible, but two internal travel days leave limited time in each place. For seven days, two main bases usually work better. Add more nights if you want the north, the capital and the southern coast in one trip.

Should I choose Phuket or Krabi?

Choose Phuket for a wide range of beach areas, restaurants and nightlife. Krabi is a strong fit for limestone scenery, Railay and island outings. Both involve travel between sights, so your hotel location matters as much as the destination.

Is Ayutthaya worth a day trip from Bangkok?

Yes, especially if you enjoy history and temple architecture. Choose a manageable selection of ruins and allow for the return journey. An early start helps you avoid doing all your outdoor sightseeing in the hottest part of the day.

Which places in Thailand suit a family holiday?

Bangkok and a beach base such as Phuket, Krabi or Koh Samui can work well. Choose hotels and activities around your children’s ages, and avoid too many transfers. Check the boat type and journey length before adding an island excursion.

Is Pattaya an alternative to Phuket for a short trip?

Pattaya is easier to combine with Bangkok by road, making it useful when time is limited. Phuket offers a different island setting and usually needs a flight from Bangkok. Decide whether convenience or a longer island stay is the priority.

Do I need to stay overnight on the Phi Phi Islands?

No. Day excursions operate from bases such as Phuket and Krabi, subject to conditions and schedules. An overnight stay gives you more time, but adds luggage transfers and boat connections. Check the exact islands and permitted stops included in your chosen trip.
