The Chavittunatakam Dance is one of the Christian dance forms of Kerala whose origin can be traced to the time of the Portuguese invasion. The Chavittunatakom dance evolved in Kerala during the 16th century A.D. with Portuguese colonization.

With a striking resemblance to the European Christian Miracle Play, the Chavittunatakam Dance brings the flavor of medieval dance dramas. It shows the perfect blend of European art with Kerala culture.

Characters of the Chavittunatakam Dance

The characters adorn the medieval Greco-Roman costumes, which depict the traces of that period. The plays are generally performed on an open stage or in a church, as they are considered a Christian art form in Kerala. The narration used in this dance form is typically a mix of Tamil and Malayalam. During the dance, the dancers stamp on the dance floor. This stamping is called Chavittu, from where the name of this unique dance form of Kerala originates.

What does the Chavittunatakam Dance depict?

The Chavittunatakam Dance resembles the Kathakali Dance but here it only depicts the conquests and victories of Christian warriors. The glittering embellishments, beautiful dresses, and European characters make this play unique. In particular, Chavittunatakam Dance is considered successful only if the stage caves in with too much stamping.
