The High Court of Madras is one of the three courts set up in India during the reign of the Queen Victoria. These important buildings have deliberately been constructed in the Presidency Towns by the Letters Patent of the Queen. The honorable chief justice and the head of the Judiciary were all present at the time of the inauguration.

Presently, there are 40 Honorable Judges at the Madras High Court and they are all highly qualified and experienced. Criminal cases and Civil Cases are equally handled in the court with care and precision. The following categories of judicial officers in the High Court are present.

They are the District Judges, Subordinate Judges, and District Munsifs. All these officers are involved in Civil Cases that are abundant in India. The Criminal Cases involves the following; Sessions Judges, Chief Judicial Magistrates, Judicial Magistrates and the Assistant Sessions Judges.

Under the Constitutional Act known as the Madras City Civil Courts Act the Madras High Court had been established. Thereafter it started functioning and there are several functioning courts in Chennai which are Labor Court, Court for Small Causes, State Transport Appellate Transport Tribunal and the Special Courts under the TNPID Act.

The High Court in Chennai performs both Judicial and Administrative functions. Whatever be the magnitude of the subject of dispute, they are all resolved by the Gazetted Officers and other staffs of the Madras High Court. There are many forms of Registrar like the Administrative Registrar, Judicial Registrar and the Management Registrar.

The Judicial works of the High Court of Madras that are associated with civil and criminal issues are analyzed by the Appeal Examiners Section. There are many other sections at the High Court in Chennai. They include the Filing Section, Notice Section, Posting Section, Translation and Printing Department and the Vernacular Record Section.

The most important however, is the Personal Assistant to the Honorable Judges of the High Court in Chennai. Recently, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has been inaugurated in the year 2004.
