Dedicated to Lord Krishna, the Chayavaneashwara Temple, Chennai is one of the most popular temples of Chennai. The history of Chayavaneashwara Temple, Chennai dates back to the 8th century. Built by the Pallavas, the temple was renovated and embellished by the kings of the Vijayanagar dynasty in the 16th century.

Built over 1.5 acres of land, the Chayavaneashwara Temple in Chennai is well known for its marvelous architecture. The presiding deity of the temple is Sri Venkata Krishnaswamy. The idol of the deity is quite imposing and holds a conch shell in one hand and the Gnana Mudra in the other hand. Also known as Geeta Charya, the presiding deity, Sri Venkata Krishnaswamy is revered by the devotees.

The elaborately decorated temple has a small shrine for Sri Ranganatha placed on the Adi Sesha. Other deities of the Chayavaneashwara Temple, Chennai are Sri Narasimha and Sri Varaha.

Like most temples of Chennai, Chayavaneashwara Temple also has a tank which is known as Karavei. The Chayavaneashwara Temple is believed to be among the 108 sacred sites among Vaishnavites.
