One of the best ways to get closer to Nilgiri’s enchanting aura is getting onboard the Nilgiri Mountain Railways. As the train traces the meandering railway trails, you will witness soothing view of the hills topped up with refreshing aroma and blissful breeze.

The British put appreciable efforts to introduce the train in 1908. UNESCO added Nilgiri Mountain Railway in the list of World Heritage Site as the part of Mountain Railways of India, in 2005. The train covers a distance of 26 km and travels past 16 tunnels, 208 curves and 250 bridges.

During this three and a half hour journey it stops over at nearly thirteen stations; including Mettupalaiyam and Coonoor. The trains starting from Metupalaiyam get into business from 7:10 am. One way charges for first class journey costs around INR 142, while for second class journey charge is around INR 24.
