Kaziranga National Park in Assam

Kaziranga National Park in Assam is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous worldwide for achieving success in the conservation of the one-horned Indian Rhinoceros. Besides, it also provides a habitat for a number of threatened species and migratory birds.

Spread over 430sq. km, Kaziranga National Park is among the top national parks of Assam, gifted with a wide variety of flora and fauna. Some of the fauna found here include the great Indian one-horned rhino, pygmy hog, royal Bengal tiger, elephant, swamp deer, Gangetic dolphin, wild buffalo, and golden langur, besides others. The forests of Kaziranga are also divided into three major types.

Manas National Park

A UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site in India, Manas National Park in Assam allures visitors to its natural beauty. Home to more than 20 endangered species, this national park is spread over an area of 500sq. Km and consists of extensive grasslands. It is set at the foothills of the Bhutan-Himalayas and is blessed with rich biodiversity.

Being a game reserve since 1928, this sanctuary in Assam became a Tiger Reserve in 1974 and further, a World Heritage Site in 1985, before being finally declared a National Park in 1990.

The Manas National Park is home to 450 species of birds, 36 reptiles, 55 mammals, and 3 amphibians. The popular inhabitants include the Indian Tigers, Indian Rhinoceros, Asian Elephants, Leopards, Black Panther, Asian Golden Cat, Barking Deer, Hornbill, Pelicans, etc.

Nameri National Park

Nameri National Park is set at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. Bordering Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, it is located along the banks of a tributary of River Brahmaputra. Spread over 344 sq. km, the national park is blessed with biodiversity.

The habitat of Nameri National Park comprises tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forests, bamboo, and open grassland along rivers. The sanctuary is a popular Tiger Reserve. Animals found here are Leopard, Elephant, Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Hispid hare, Capped Langur, Sloth Bear, etc.

The park is home to 300 avian species including several rare bird species comprising the endangered White white-winged wood duck. Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park

Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park is the oldest game reserve in Assam. It is spread over 78.81 sq km of alluvial flood plains of the many rivers. The park is an integral part of the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. It was once occupied by the tribal population but abandoned due to an epidemic breakout in the region. Today, it is an important breeding ground for many fish varieties as many as 50. Mammals, reptiles, amphibians, avians, and flora inhabit the sanctuary.

Mammals found here are one-horned Rhinoceros, Tiger, Maljuria Elephants, Hog Deer, Wild Pig, Civet Cat, Porcupine, and Gangetic Dolphin. 222 species of birds have so far been recorded. Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary Assam

Among the best national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Assam is Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary. Located in the Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts in Assam, this wildlife sanctuary is a must-visit place for wildlife lovers.
