What’s So Special about Valentine’s Day?

What comes to your mind when you realize that Valentine’s Day is around the corner? Isn’t it a time for many to get intimate, passionate and loving with their partners? As an individual, this is something I’ve closely observed in my friend circle. For many, February 14 is a time when people go out of their way to show their love, care and appreciation towards their partners. Before going any further with a few handy tips on how to make your Valentine’s Day a memorable occasion, I would like to give you a short insight into its history.

History of Valentine’s Day
The history of Valentine’s Day is associated with several Christian martyrs who were named as ‘Valentine’. There is another legend which says that Valentine was a priest in Rome, who served during the 3rd century. The 3rd century was a time when Emperor Claudius II banned marriages for young men but Saint Valentine defied his words and went to conduct secret marriages for young lovers. He was later put to death for this act.

Symbols of Love

The most popular symbol of Valentine’s Day is heart, which is often found in the shade of red and pink. Besides, there are pictures and models of cupid. As per Roman Mythology, cupid is the god of desire, love and affection. He is a winged god with a bow and arrow. The bow and arrow is used to strike the hearts of people so that they can fall in love with whoever they come across first.

Different Valentine Day Flowers

Valentine’s Day is considered as the day of love and flowers are the best way to express our love to our loved ones. In the age of modern technology wherein applications like Whatsapp, BBM and social networking are taking edge over other traditional methods, still people use flowers to surprise their love. You might have seen boys going down on their knees and proposing their love with a bouquet of flowers. Each bouquet carries different flowers such as Roses, Gerbera Daisies, Tulips, Casa Blanca Lilies, Peruvian Lilies, Carnations, Orchids, Sunflowers, Irises and Gardenias.

Celebrations around the World

The celebrations of Valentine’s Day started in the 19th century in modern England. Nowadays it is celebrated in most parts of the world. In China, it is also known as ‘Lovers’ festival, when most men give flowers and chocolates to their lady love. In European countries and U.S.A, it is celebrated as the ‘Day of Love’ wherein people give flowers, chocolates and gifts to the person they love. In India, the Valentine’s Day has become quite popular among teenagers and college goers. Even if you are too shy to express your love, Valentine’s Day will offer you a great opportunity to express your love.

Think of a Holiday Plan

Men/women who want to show their partners that he/she is your special valentine, it is better to try out something different instead of the old bouquet or a chocolate box. Try out something different this year. Chalk out a plan and scuttle off to some nearby destination with your beloved. Luckily, 14 February, 2014 happens to be Friday. Therefore, the weekend can be utilized to head for a refreshing trip. For people living in metropolitan cities, Goa, Kerala, Ooty, Uttaranchal and Kullu & Manali are some of the best places for romantic holidays.

Some Handy Tips for Celebrating Valentine’s Day

It is advisable to make it an occasion for the two of you. Often, we have seen men going out of their way to make this day special for their women. But it’s time to turn the tables and surprise him this time.
• Surprise him with a bouquet of flowers (send it to his workplace), prepare his favorite dinner and take him out for a candle light dinner.
• Shower him with gifts of his choice. Pay attention to every minute detail. There is a popular saying that the way to a man’s heart goes through his stomach. Besides, you can gift something that he has a keen interest in. Make sure the gift should be his favorite brand. For instance, if your man is a gadget freak, gift him a tablet case. Make sure it has all his favorite apps and songs.
• Decorate the entire house to create a festive mood. Put his favorite flowers in the vas and place pillows, new cushions& curtains and scented candles throughout the house. Make him feel that the entire world revolves around him.
• Make a card confessing your love for him. Remember that the card should be made by you only. He will appreciate the efforts and feel warmth.
In a modern society where life is busy, we hardly have a time to focus entirely on a single person. Therefore, use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to surprise your beloved by giving the gift of time.
