History of Sabarmati Ashram

Gandhi ji started his Satyagraha movement from here, and several followers joined him. The famous Dandi March during the independence movement also began from the Sabarmati Ashram, and Gandhi ji had even taken a vow that he would not return to Sabarmati Ashram unless India were freed from the shackles of British rule. The Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad was the center of many events that significantly influenced Indian independence. Mahatma Gandhi made Sabarmati Ashram his home on 12 March 1930, and from here, he sowed the seeds of non-violent revolution in the hearts of millions of Indians. Mahatma Gandhi preferred this serene location on the banks of the Sabarmati River for several reasons. Gandhi in Ahmedabad: This gallery is dedicated to the life of Gandhi Ji from 1915 to 1930 and is home to 50 hand-drawn panels depicting the significant events of his life in Ahmedabad.

My Life is My Message: It is another gallery of this museum where you can get a better insight into the life of Gandhi Ji. You will find more than 250 photographs of Gandhi from his birth at Porbandar to his tragic assassination here.

Painting: In this gallery section, you will see the 8 life-size portraits that showcase the activities of Gandhi Ji, such as Marching, Spinning, meditating, and many more.

Library and Archives: This section is one of the most integral parts from the collection point of view. It is home to 34,111 letters and 1371 manuscripts, 612 audio cassettes, 106 video cassettes, more than 50,000 books, and 6,000 photo negatives. On top of that, you will find a house souvenir shop where you can buy some items such as stationery, statues, postcards, charkha models, and keychains.
