Erected in 1861 under the reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar, Jaganmohan Palace lies westwards of Mysore Palace. When Mysore Palace was damaged by fire, it was built as a royal residence, and the royal family stayed there till 1897. A part of it has now been turned into a museum and is known as Jaganmohan Palace Art Gallery cum Museum. Jaganmohan Palace in Mysore is a must-visit for all art connoisseurs; it was founded in 1915. Later, in 1955, under the name of Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar, it was renamed the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery. Artwork and artifacts from all over Southern India can be displayed here. The entry gate is no less regal; it has beautiful, delicate carvings. The art gallery is also the proud owner of the original oil paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, based on different mythological events. Another attraction is the artwork ‘Lady With The Lamp’ by S.G. Heldnker, a famous Indian artist. The paintings here are over 2000 and belong to different styles of paintings such as Shantiniketan, Mughal, and Mysore. The palace complex also comprises an auditorium, used for musical festivals, traditional dance performances, and similar other cultural programs, mainly during the time of Mysore Dasara. Glass, metal, ceramic artifacts, musical instruments, weapons, old coins, currencies, and sculptures are also exhibited here. Special engravings and unique clocks from China and Japan are an exceptional addition. The Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery collection includes a musical calendar from France, several toys, and religious bells from Nepal.
