On the foothills of Chamundi Hills, right behind the Mysore Zoo, Karanji Lake is a charming lake and a popular tourist attraction of Mysore. One of the biggest lakes in the Karnataka state, this lake covers an area of 90 acres. The Lake attracts bird-watching enthusiasts from all over as it is home to around 90 avifauna species, including resident and migratory birds, including darters, herons, egrets, painted storks, rare Glossy Ibis, sandpipers, bill storks, sunbirds, and pelicans. One can also spot small mammals and various butterfly species around the Lake. Moreover, Karanji Lake boating is another of the best activities to enjoy here. Karanji Lake was originally a percolation tank founded around 100 years back by the then ruler of Mysore. The locals used it for daily needs like drinking, bathing, etc. Later, in 1976, the Lake became a part of the Mysore Zoo. The area has been developed into Karanji Lake Nature Park. Now, it has become one of the must-visit destinations in Mysore for families with kids. The total catchment area of this Mysore lake is 745 hectares, and it has a 2.5 km feeder channel from the Chamundi hills. Stroll through the aviary on the banks of the Lake while listening to the birds chirping, spotting colorful birds, and enjoying the spread of serenity. The longest walk-through aviary in India is 60 m long, 20 m in height, and 40 m wide. The aviary has about 17 species of birds. At Karanji Lake, there is a butterfly park also that consists of a wide variety of plant species that attract colorful butterflies. Here, you can see around 45 butterfly species. Other attractions here include a boat riding facility and a children’s corner. The Lake is just 3 km away from the city center. There is a massive watchtower (10 m high) from where visitors can enjoy bird watching and lovely views of the vast surroundings.
