Maheshwar Travel Guide

Also renowned as Mahishmati in the ancient age, Maheshwar was the capital of King Kartivarjun. Situated on the banks of the Narmada River, this ancient city finds relevance in the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata.

This ancient city revived its past glory and charm under the shelter of the Holkar Queen of Indore, Rani Ahilyabai. Today it is renowned for its cotton and silk blend handloom saris apart from the Maheshwar temples which still bears the testimony of the by gone age. The beautiful Ghats along the river Narmada are nice places to spend time in meditation.

Among the numerous temples in this city the worth visiting ones are the Kaleshwara, Vithaleswara, Ahileswara and Rajarajeswara temples. Another place worth visiting while on your tour to Maheshwar is the important archaeological site of Navdatoli. It was discovered in 1950 and the excavations yielded microliths and pottery.
