The city of Orchha has a highly illustrated history that spreads over several centuries. It is due to this history of Orchha that the place is marked by the existence of a number of palaces which form the major tourist attractions in Orchha. The region of Orchha was dominated by the rule of the Rajputs. Even the mighty Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, failed to stamp his authority over the city as he was defeated by the forces led by Raja Jujhar Singh.

One of the foremost palaces in Orchha, India was built by a ruler named Bir Singh Deo as a mark of respect shown towards the Mughal Emperor Jahangir during the latter’s first visit to the city of Orchha. The palace was also named after Jahangir. All the palaces in Orchha are lavishly laid out. The structures are usually set amidst sprawling lawns and beautiful gardens. The prominent entrances lead to the hallowed corridors of the palaces thus creating a magnificent sight.

The walls of these monuments are artistically decorated with paintings and other forms of ornamentations. The domes of some of the structures represent Islamic style of architecture. Almost all the palaces in Orchha has separate accommodations for women and other members of the royal family while the ground floor in some of them consist of meeting halls in which various royal ceremonies were also organized.
