Nainital Zoo is home to endangered wildlife species and is settled at 2100 m above sea level on Sher Ka Danda Hill. Being the only zoo in Uttarakhand, it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Nainital. 

This zoo was established in 194 and opened to the public in 1995. It is officially named G B Pant High Altitude Zoo and is spread over 11 acres of land. Nainital Zoo was also home to only Siberian Tiger until he died in 2011. Creating awareness of wildlife conversation is the main motive of this zoo. In addition, there are several events organized in this zoo for students and children to make them aware of wildlife and nature. 

 This high-altitude zoo is a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Some of the famous animals in Nainital Zoo seen here are the Bengal tiger, Tibetan wolves, sambar, leopard cat, and Himalayan bear. The zoo also has many high-altitude birds, like kalij pheasant, Lady Amherst pheasant, rose-ringed parakeet, golden pheasant, and red jungle fowl.

Distance Nainital Zoo from Nainital City

Nainital Zoo is situated almost 2 km from Nainital City. Tourists can walk to the zoo or hire a taxi. However, it takes almost 15 minutes to reach there on foot.

Entry Fee and Timing Nainital Zoo

The ticket price of Nainital Zoo are different for adults and children. For adults from the age group of 13 to 60 years, the entry charges are INR 50, and for children from 5 to 12 years, it is INR 20. Entry for senior citizens and disabled people is free. Also, students can visit there on World Environment Day, Zoo Foundation Day, Ozone Day, and Wildlife Week for free. However, if someone is required to take the camera with them, they have to pay INR 25 as a fee, and for a professional photography camera, one has to pay INR 200.

The timings of the Nainital Zoo are 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM every day except Monday. The zoo remains closed on Republic Day, Holi, Independence Day, and Diwali.

How to Reach Nainital Zoo

Situated at 2 km from the main bus stand of the town, Nainital Zoo is well-connected by road from the Tallital bus stand. Private vehicle is not allowed to travel near the zoo, so tourists can reach there by shared jeep, which costs INR 30 per person. The travelers can also trek to the zoo, which is easy and the best option to reach the zoo.

The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport, which is situated 70 km away. Kathgodam railway station is the nearest railhead, located at 36 km. The taxis and buses are easily available from the airport and railway station to reach the city.

The summer season is the best time to visit Nainital Zoo when the weather remains soothing and pleasant for the sightseeing tour. It is a perfect time to spot wildlife species in their natural habitat when they stay comfortable with the climatic conditions.
