Situated near Perumbavoor on the banks of Periyar River in the Ernakulam District (Kochi), Kodanad Elephant Sanctuary is a must-visit place for animal lovers. It is also called the Kodanad Elephant training center, where stranded adult and baby elephants from the forest regions across Kerala are rescued and trained. Elephants are also considered sacred animals in Keralas, and no festival or celebration is complete without a massive elephant procession.
Back in the 60s, Kodanad was known as one of the largest elephant training centers where these giant creatures were captured in the Malayattoor forests and trained at Kodanad. Later in the year 1970, capturing of elephants was banned by the Government of India. Since then, Kodanad has been used as a rescue training center for elephants.
