Varanasi is the oldest city in the world and one of the most sacred cities in India. It is rightly said that this city is older than legends and traditions. Varanasi is situated on the bank of the Ganges River. In our Hindu Mythology, the River Ganga is considered a demigod who runs through heaven.
This sacred river is said to wash out all the sins of the living and the dead. Ganga Aarti is a devotional ritual that offers thanks and praise to the river. Ganga Aarti is performed daily in the evening by a group of priests at the Dashashwamedh Ghat. The view of the Ghat in the evening during the Aarti is so spectacular and serene. This ancient tradition is very famous among tourists.
The saints, wearing orange kurtas, a stole over their shoulders, and silk dhotis with a golden border – all of them colour-coordinated – conduct the ceremony. The entire event lasts approximately 45 minutes. Ganga Aarti in Varanasi is conducted while facing the holy river. The group of saints utter sacred hymns from the Vedas and Upanishads. The priests waved the multi-tiered brass lamps in a synchronised motion. Conch shells are blown during the ceremony. You can also visit other famous places in Varanasi, in addition to engaging in the Ganga Aarti.
The fragrance sticks, oil lamps, and camphor are burnt following the centuries-old traditions. The sound of the chants and the fragrance of the camphor and other things fill the surroundings with spirituality and tranquillity. After the Aarti, people also released small oil lamps decorated with flowers on leaves to float on the river. The Ganga Aarti can be enjoyed from the river, for which one needs to hire a boat.
