Which Kerala Beaches are Best for Swimming, Surfing, and Sunsets?
Overview
Looking for golden beaches and warm waves? Kerala has some of the best on the west coast. I’ve spent countless evenings chasing sunsets along this coast and still get surprised by how different each beach feels. Some are perfect for quiet swims, others call out to surfers, and a few just have that magic when the sky turns orange.
In this guide, I have highlighted the beaches I keep returning to for views, water, and vibe.
1. Varkala Beach – Cliff Views and Peaceful Swims

When I need to slow down, I visit Varkala Beach. The beach is situated below a red laterite cliff, with an array of yoga cafes and beachfront cafes. The water is clean and calm, and it is also one of the safest swimming grounds in Kerala. Bonus – the sunset views from the cliff! Unbeatable.
Best For: Swimming, yoga, cliffside cafes
Best Time to Visit: December to February
Highlight: Cliff-top promenade with ocean views
Looking for a relaxed beach holiday with great views and gentle waves?
2. Kovalam Beach – Surf, Shacks, and Sunrise Swims

Kovalam is where beach life meets a bit of buzz. It is one of the most popular beaches in Kerala, mainly among those who are beginners in surfing. To make your first ride, Lighthouse Beach is an ideal place with its stable waves and surf schools. And even if you are not a surfer, morning swims at this time are refreshing too.
Ideal For: Surfing, swimming, beach cafes
Best Time to Go There: November to March
Highlight: Sunrise views and surf-friendly waters
Looking for a beach that is both lively and relaxed?
3. Marari Beach – Quiet Luxury and Soft Sands

Marari’s is where I can really disconnect every time I need to. It’s peaceful, it’s tidy, and it’s fringed with palm trees that appear to lean to one side in slow motion. The sea is soft enough for extended swims, and the boutique resorts along the beach understand how to spoil you rotten—private pool villas, seafood on the sea, and Ayurvedic massages to dissolve your tension.
Best For: Swimming, luxury stays, serene retreats
Best Time to Visit: November to February
Highlight: Undisturbed beach with eco-luxury resorts
Real Experience: One night, I saw the sky pinken while enjoying a tender coconut beneath a palm tree, and I did not even glance at my phone.

4. Bekal Beach – Fort Views and Sunset Walks

Bekal beach is like stepping into a postcard. You’ve got a 17th-century fort on one side and the open sea stretching out on the other. It’s not your typical lounging beach, but it’s perfect for long walks, sunset photos, and soaking in a bit of history while the waves crash nearby.
Best For: Scenic walks, history lovers, sunset views
Best Time to Visit: December and January
Highlight: The classic view of Bekal Fort against the sea
5. Kappil Beach – Where Backwaters Kiss the Sea

Kappil is where you experience the best of both worlds, waves on one side and peaceful backwaters on the other. It’s peaceful, tidy, and still a secret. Perfect for couples or anyone who needs a quiet day without the crowds.
You’ll find a thin strip of road that stretches between the sea and the backwaters. It’s one of the most scenic drives I’ve taken in Kerala.
Best For: peaceful getaways, nature enthusiasts, backwater vistas
Best Time to Be There: December to March
Highlight: A scarce beach-backwater combination with breathtaking scenery

Let us design a Kappil escape with boutique stays and easy access to both the sea and the backwaters.
6. Payyambalam Beach – Leisurely Strolls and Homely Flavors

Payyambalam has this easy, lived-in feel. It’s a long, open beach much favored by the locals for evening walks, family vacations, and street food. It’s a tranquil, not touristy, vibe with stunning sunsets.
I spent an hour one time simply walking along the beach with no agenda—just waves, breeze, and that orange Kannur sky.
Best For: Evening walks, family, sunsets
Best Time to Visit: November to February
Highlight: Purbler strip of sand is less crowded with tourists and local snack shops

7. Thottada Beach – Sunset Seeker’s Secret Treasure

Thottada is one of those beaches you stumble upon and insist on keeping to yourself. It’s peaceful, pristine, and has the feel of your own private slice of heaven. Most travelers prefer lodging in quaint homestays or green-splashed eco-resorts nestled within the jungle.
During one night here, I sat watching the sky grow orange from a hammock, with nothing more than waves and creaking palms for sound.
Best For: Photographers, couples, quiet escapes
Best Time to Visit: December and January
Highlight: Isolated location with pristine natural beauty
Real Experience: If you’re a sunset enthusiast, this is where time comes to a grinding halt in the most beautiful way.
