Puthanpalli (New) Church is the biggest and tallest church in Thrissur, centrally located in Thrissur town. The church is well-known for its Gothic and historic styles of architecture.
Spread over an area of 25000 sq ft, the Puthanpalli (New) Church has three towers, two in front and one in back. The church was sanctioned by the Maharaja of Cochin, His Excellency Rama Varma. The church was constructed in 1940 with the blessings of His Excellency, Rt. Rev. Dr. Francis Vazhapilly.
On April 25th, 1992, the church was raised to the status of a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II. After that, the church came to be called the Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours, or Puthanpalli (New) Church. This elevation made the church a perfect example of all liturgical services and the administration of sacraments. In addition, fire services are held here every Friday and Sunday, in which the faithful worshippers participate actively.
