Mughal Garden

The numerous parks and garden in Delhi traces back to primarily, the Mughal legacy- the Mughals, famous for a discerning aesthetic sense and fad for magnificent architecture, were also very fond of landscaped garden. After the British established their empire in India and made Delhi their capital, they set about designing and decorating the city after their heart. Meaning, they set about designing parks and garden all over the city, perhaps to make it look more like their own capital back home (the parks and garden in England need no new applaud). The Mughal garden in Delhi are located within the premises of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the residence of the first citizen of the India- the President.

The Mughal garden- History

The Mughal garden was designed by Sir Edwin Lutynes for Lady Harding. It occupies an area of 13 acres and is divided into three sections (rectangular, long and circular garden) and sports a blend of the formal Mughal style with the design of a British Garden.

Mughal style canals, fountains and terraces and chatris adorn the landscape of the garden, along with flower beds, hedges and a large variety of trees and flowers like roses, marigold, bougainvillea, sweet william, viscaria etc among many others.

The garden has four waterways with uniquely crafted fountains at their intersections that consist of 3 tiered huge red sandstone discs that resemble lotus leaves. The chequered flowerbeds lend an enchanting look to this wonderfully landscaped garden. With in the campus, there are many small and big lawns, like Pearl garden, butterfly garden and circular garden. The circular garden is the place which is beautified with massed segmental and tiered flower beds and is considered the best place to see butterflies.
