Indrawati Tiger Reserve

The Indrawati Tiger Reserve named after the perennial river Indravati, is located in Dantewad (formerly Bastar) district of Madhya Pradesh. In the catchments area of the Indravati River are the Reserve forests. Small hills like Kutroo, Kandlapatru and Matti Murka cover the region.

Indrawati Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh is one of the Project Tiger Reserves in India. The prime purpose of forming the Indrawati Tiger Reserve was protection and conservation of tigers. In the year 1983, the sanctuary was brought under Project Tiger. It is also the ideal habitat for the endangered species, Wild Buffalo.

The land vegetation of Indrawati Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh is Southern Moist Mixed Deciduous Forest and Southern Dry Mixed Deciduous Forest. The major species of flora identified in the sanctuary are Teak, Dhaora, Lendia, Saja, Salai, Moyan, Mahua, Dhoban, Siras, Tendu, Bija, Achar, Karra, Kullu, Shisham, Semal, Haldu, Arjun, Bel, etc.

There are a plethora of animals at Indrawati Tiger Reserve. Besides tiger and wild buffalo, there is a diversity of faunal species including leopard, Barking deer, Nilgai, Spotted Deer, Sambhar, Gaur, etc that are seen here. Among reptiles spotted by tourists in the sanctuary are Fresh Water Crocodile, Common Monitor Lizard, Indian Chameleon, Indian Rock Python, Cobra, etc.
