Udaipur Lakes

Plan Your Dream Vacation

Udaipur’s lakes are best experienced as part of a structured sightseeing flow rather than visited individually. For most travellers, the strongest plan includes one iconic lake experience (Lake Pichola), one relaxed promenade or local lake (Fateh Sagar), and, if time allows, one quieter or out-of-city lake.

The value of these lakes varies significantly depending on timing, crowd levels, and whether you’re looking for a boat experience, a scenic pause, or a half-day outing.

This guide helps you prioritise Udaipur’s lakes based on real visit value – what each lake offers, how much time it needs, and how to include it within a realistic itinerary.

Lake Pichola

The oldest and most celebrated lake in Udaipur — and one of the most beautiful urban lakes in India. Built in 1362 AD, Lake Pichola is the heart of Udaipur’s heritage landscape. The City Palace rises directly from its eastern bank, and two island palaces sit within its waters — Jag Mandir and the Taj Lake Palace (now a luxury hotel) — creating a visual composition that has made Udaipur one of the most photographed cities in Asia.

Boat rides: The defining Lake Pichola experience. Sunset boat rides from the City Palace jetty are the most popular — the light on the palace and the island palaces in the golden hour is extraordinary. Morning rides are quieter and give better reflections. Book sunset slots in advance during the October to March peak season — they fill up.

Jag Mandir — Island palace on Lake Pichola. Shah Jahan took shelter here during his rebellion against Jahangir. The palace’s architecture influenced elements of the Taj Mahal. Carved marble elephants at the jetty.
Timings: 10 AM–6 PM.

Taj Lake Palace — The other island palace, now operating as one of the world’s most celebrated luxury hotels. Non-guests can visit for a meal or afternoon tea — worth planning if the budget allows. Book well in advance.

Ambrai Ghat — The ghat on the western bank of Lake Pichola, directly facing the City Palace and Lal Ghat. One of the strongest photography positions in Udaipur for the palace reflection, particularly after sunset when the palace is illuminated.

Tips: Book sunset boat rides in advance — slots fill up in peak season. The boat ride is non-negotiable on a Udaipur visit. Combine with City Palace on the same afternoon — palace visit first, boat ride at sunset, Ambrai Ghat for the post-sunset reflection.

Fateh Sagar Lake

Fateh Sagar Lake

The second major lake of Udaipur — an artificial lake north of Lake Pichola connected by a canal, built originally in 1678 and rebuilt by Maharana Fateh Singh in 1889. The lake has three islands: Nehru Garden (accessible by boat, popular picnic destination), the Udaipur Solar Observatory (one of India’s four solar observatories), and Mohan Magri. The lakeside promenade — Fateh Sagar Lake Road — is one of Udaipur’s most popular evening walks, lined with food stalls and offering clear views across the water toward the Aravalli hills.

The World Music Festival is held on Fateh Sagar Lake each February, with 150 international artists performing at the lakeside over three days.

Timings: Open through the day — evening promenade is most atmospheric.

Tips: The lakeside promenade is best at sunset and in the evening when local families and visitors congregate. Combine with the Chetak Circle market nearby on the same afternoon. The Sajjangarh Palace sunset viewpoint overlooks both Fateh Sagar and the city — combine both in a single late afternoon circuit for the strongest evening sequence in Udaipur.

Saheliyon ki Bari (Garden of Maids of Honour)

Built by Maharana Sangram Singh for the ladies of the royal household, Saheliyon ki Bari is a heritage garden on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake featuring ornamental lotus pools, marble elephants, carved pavilions, and fountains. One of Udaipur’s most visited heritage gardens — the combination of water features, marble architecture, and manicured grounds makes it a strong photography stop and a pleasant break from the city’s busier monuments.

Timings: 9 AM–7 PM.
Entry fee: Indians INR 10, foreigners INR 50.

Tips: The fountains are operational during visitor hours — the lotus pools are the strongest visual element. Allow 45–60 minutes. Morning visits give the quietest atmosphere before crowds arrive. Combine with Fateh Sagar Lake on the same afternoon circuit.

Jaisamand Lake

One of the largest artificial lakes in Asia, when it was built – located approximately 48 km from Udaipur. A significant wildlife sanctuary surrounds the lake. Strong angling destination. Best included on a day excursion from Udaipur rather than combined with the city lake circuit.

Timings: Open during daylight hours — confirm locally.
Entry fee: Confirm locally.

Tips: Early morning gives the best birdwatching and angling conditions. Combine with the Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary on the same excursion. Allow a half-day for the full excursion.

Udai Sagar Lake

Udai Sagar Lake

Located 13 km east of Udaipur. Built by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1565. A quieter, less-visited lake that suits travellers looking for a peaceful natural retreat away from the city’s main tourist circuit.

Timings: Open during daylight hours — confirm locally.
Entry fee: Confirm locally.

Tips: Best for travellers with a second or third day in Udaipur after covering the primary lake circuit. Morning visits give the most peaceful atmosphere.

Swaroop Sagar Lake (Connector Lake | Low-Key Scenic Stop)

Why it matters:
Swaroop Sagar functions more as a connecting water body between Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar rather than a standalone attraction. It adds continuity to Udaipur’s lake system and offers quieter views away from the main tourist concentration.

Time needed: 20–30 minutes (viewpoint stop)

Best timing: Morning or late afternoon

Pairing logic: Works as a short stop while moving between Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar

Practical notes: Not a primary sightseeing stop. Best treated as a passing visual pause rather than a destination.

Doodh Talai (Sunset Viewpoint | Compact Experience)

Why it matters:
A small lake area near Lake Pichola, Doodh Talai is known more for its viewpoints and access to Karni Mata Temple (via ropeway) than for the lake itself. It offers elevated views of the City Palace and Pichola.

Time needed: 45–60 minutes

Best timing: Sunset

Pairing logic: Combine with Lake Pichola (evening) or ropeway ride to Karni Mata Temple

Practical notes: Crowded at sunset. The lake itself is secondary—the viewpoint experience is the main draw.

Rang Sagar Lake (Quiet Extension of Pichola System)

Rang Sagar Lake

Why it matters:
Rang Sagar is a lesser-known lake connected to Lake Pichola, offering a quieter and more local environment. It lacks major viewpoints but adds depth to the interconnected lake network.

Time needed: 20–30 minutes

Best timing: Morning

Pairing logic: Can be seen incidentally while exploring areas around Pichola

Practical notes: Not a standalone visit. Best understood as part of the broader lake system rather than an individual attraction.

Jaisamand Lake (Dhebar Lake) (Destination Lake | Half-Day Excursion)

Why it matters:
One of the largest artificial lakes in Asia, Jaisamand offers scale, isolation, and a natural setting very different from Udaipur’s urban lakes. The surrounding wildlife sanctuary adds to its appeal.

Time needed: Half-day excursion

Best timing: Early morning (for quieter conditions and birdlife)

Pairing logic: Combine with Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary as a dedicated outing

Practical notes: Requires travel (~48 km). Not part of the city lake circuit. Best for travellers with extra time.

Udai Sagar Lake (Quiet Retreat | Secondary Stop)

Why it matters:
A historic lake built by Maharana Udai Singh II, Udai Sagar offers a calm and less crowded alternative to the main lakes. It suits travellers looking for a quieter natural setting.

Time needed: 45–60 minutes

Best timing: Morning

Pairing logic: Best visited after covering primary lakes, or as part of a relaxed second-day plan

Practical notes: Limited infrastructure. Not essential for short stays.

How Much to Cover Based on Your Time

  • 1 day in Udaipur: Focus only on Lake Pichola + Fateh Sagar

  • 2 days: Add Saheliyon ki Bari and a relaxed lake circuit

  • 3+ days: Include Jaisamand or quieter lakes

Route Logic

These lakes work best when grouped into a structured sequence rather than visited randomly.

  • Udaipur lake circuit (full day): City Palace morning → Lake Pichola sunset boat ride → Ambrai Ghat for the post-sunset palace reflection → Fateh Sagar lakeside promenade evening.

  • Garden and lake afternoon: Saheliyon ki Bari → Fateh Sagar Lake promenade → Chetak Circle market.

  • Day excursion: Jaisamand Lake — 48 km, combined with a wildlife sanctuary visit.

Planning Notes

October to March is the strongest window. Lake Pichola sunset boat ride is the single most important experience in Udaipur — book in advance during peak season. Monsoon (July–September) fills the lakes and makes the landscape extraordinarily lush — a genuinely rewarding time to visit despite the rain. Fateh Sagar lakeside promenade is best in the evening. Saheliyon ki Bari is best in the morning before crowds arrive.
