History

J.T. Boileau built St. George’s Cathedral in Agra in 1823 during the British colonial period. Bishop Reginald Heber commissioned it, and this cathedral served the British community in Agra. Hence, it has become a significant landmark of this city. The church also houses memorials to British soldiers, adding to its historical value. Architecture

St. George’s Cathedral in Agra was built in a non-Gothic style, which makes it stand out as this style has been dominant for many Christian churches. This yellow ochre stucco building with white dressings is a prime example of the colonial or neo-classical style built in the British Era. Its entrance through a small hall led to an interior divided into a central hub and side galleries by six striking Ionic columns, each supporting a slightly vaulted roof. The Gothicized chancel at the east end, with its carved white sandstone screen, and the altar, enriched with Agra’s famous marble inlay work, add to the cathedral’s unique charm.
